Default Resin 2.0.5

We have a web server under IIS6/Resin 2.0.5 Windows server 2003 with JDK 1.6.0_25

The traffic can be quite heavy, around 700000 requests per day, and sometimes 10 requests per second. They use a single web server, i.e. no load balancing.

They experience heavy random performance problems, causing clients to timeout.
I have attached a graph showing the results from a service performing a poll every 60 seconds, making a standard web service query.

As it can be seen, there are gaps in the graph, indicating that the server does not respond at all. At other times the response time is peaking . The vertical red lines indicate times when clients did not get a response ( timeout.)

Configuration settings:
Max connections: 40
max idle time: 30
class update interval: 3600
thread max: 150
thread keepalive: 100
request timeout: 30s
thread_min : 5
cache dir: size 1024, entries 8192
cache-mapping url-pattern = '/' expires = '2s'
session-max : 4096
session-timeout: 30

there are 7 versions of the web services configured on that server. Only 2 or 3 of them are being used.

I realize that this version is very old. so I have several questions

1) Are there any monitoring tools or dignostics tools compatible with Resin2.0.5 which can help me find out what happens during these spikes and if so, do I need to redeploy the services before I can use such tools?

2) Would an upgrade to Resin 4 help, and if so, what is the upgrade effort ? Are there compatibility problems?

3) Could the problem be resolved by adding another server and a load balancer?

I appreciate any hints as to how I crack this one. I am not experienced within the Resin domain.

Thanks
Tor
