Quercus on port 80

i am trying to run phpBB3 on resin 3.1.9 under linux.
It works if I use the original resin.conf and change the port to 8080.
Unfortunately this is not an option in the production environment it will have to run in eventually. The port will have to be 80.

Why would Quercus not run on port 80?
How can I convince it to run on port 80?

I found this here
Redirect traffic from port 80 to port 8080 using iptables:

iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 8080

Is there another way? I am reluctant to go into iptables. And i find it hard to believe that this would be necessary.

Any ideas, comments?

Quercus on port 80

I am trying to get phpbb3 to work on resin.
This happens on both linux and windows.
It works if i choose a port other than 80.
This is OK for testing, but in the production environment it will need to run on port 80.
The port is not blocked; the are other webapps use it without problems.
The problem persists if I strip the config down to the initial resin.conf

Does quercus have an issue with port 80?
If no, what am i doing wrong?
If yes, any workarounds?

Hi roland,

Are you having sudo permission problems when you try to run Resin on port 80?

Or that Resin runs, but phpBB3 does not run? If that is the case, then it's likely something in the phpBB3 database that is preventing it from loading up correctly. A clean install might help.

Also, 3.1.9 is a really old version for Quercus. I recommend upgrading to the latest 4.0.38. You can leave Resin intact and just upgrade Quercus by using the WAR file at
